Tipping is a practiced social custom in the United States. Tipping is a voluntary act, but in some establishments it is seen as mandatory or enforced as an additional cost with the service bill. Particularly in the massage therapy industry, it is a highly practiced expectation for clients to show financial gratuity. Some chain establishments pay their employees a below average wage counting on customer’s gratuity to balance therapist’s earnings to a decent wage. Typically in these settings customers tip therapists equal to or more than their company’s pay rate. Unfortunately, since tipping is voluntary some clients can not afford to balance out a good therapists service worth. This leads to embarrassment from clients and dissatisfaction from therapists.
At ASNMassage, we do not believe in financial gratuity. We pay our therapists a proper living wage that does not affect the quality service rendered. We believe our therapists should maintain a quality standard of care for every client. In addition, we are a medical massage practice and understand the potential ethical dilemmas of tipping. Some dilemmas include making clients feel pressured, potential preferential treatment, and compromising professional boundaries. We strive to break unnecessary trends in the massage industry to enhance it’s professional image. Normally, tipping other medical professions are looked down upon or not even thought of. Do you regularly tip your doctor, chiropractor, dental hygienist, or children's teachers for providing essential quality service? After sharing our company’s philosophy on financial tipping clients may feel like it is important for them to provide financial gratuity. If that is what makes our clients feel good and it does not compromise professional ethics then it is is acceptable to humbly accept the thoughtful gift reassuring that our job in providing healing is pricelessly gratifying.
In the end, ASNMassage believes that the best form of gratitude is continuing to choose us as their number one massage provider. We highly encourage our clients to share their experience on our social media pages to let others know the quality of care we provide. In addition, we desire to continue sharing our passion by providing services to our client’s loved ones. Word of mouth to friends, family, and coworkers about our high quality service is priceless.
